The South Indian Education Society's Indian Institute of Environment Management (SIES-IIEM) has been contributing towards Extensive R&D, Academics and Outreach Activities in the Areas of Sustainable Development, Environment Management and Climate Change. Our flagship event, nurturing ‘Climate Ambassadors’ Program’ (CAP) was launched in October 2023. The main aim of this initiative is to enlighten and influence the general masses to change their lifestyles and adopt appropriate eco-friendly measures in a way that reduces environmental pollution, in general, and carbon emissions, in particular, through the proper nurturing of "Child-Ambassadors” under the guidance of SIES-Indian Institute of Environment Management.

The participants are being familiarized with the concepts of ESG (Environmental Social and Governance) and SDG (Sustainable Development Goals to help them adopt innovative methods aimed at conservation of resources and use of renewable energy in their daily life. The schools are encouraged to develop green campuses and environment friendly practices and the Climate Ambassadors will be encouraged to replicate their knowledge and practices at the community level.

The pre-launch briefing session CAP was held on 5th October, 2023, at SIES High School Matunga. Students and teachers from over 30 schools from Mumbai participated in this event and about 5 schools joined the session online from other cities.

 

 

The first phase of the CAP, themed as "Know Your Surroundings” was aimed at sensitizing the students and teachers about the flora and fauna in their surroundings. As part of this activity, students and teachers were taken on a guided visit to Maharashtra Nature Park, Mahim, in Nov, 2023. The were familiarized with details of the flora and fauna in and around the city.

 

 

A Herbarium-making Workshop and a talk by Mstr. Karnav Rastogi, a young author and poet and has been writing about the environment for the last 8 years, was held in Dec, 2023.

 

 

In the next phase the students and teachers were taken on a guided tour to India Meteorological Department, Regional Met Centre, Mumbai in February 2024. The students were given a guided tour of the working of all surface observatory instruments such as., Thermometer, Thermograph, Hygrograph., Stevenson Screens etc., used for weather forecasting. They also observed and learnt the manner in which the data received through the radar and satellite pictures is analyzed for accurate forecasting. They also had an interactive session to know about the science of seismology for earthquake measurements and prediction.
